The purpose of the study was to collect Division I Men's Basketball coaches' perceptions about the effectiveness of NCAA officiating in the 2008-2009 season.


All Division I men's basketball schools were invited to participate in a national survey assessing the overall performance of NCAA officials in the 2008-2009 season. Coaches rated officials' performance using the NCAA's current evaluation criteria:
- Fitness/communication
- Judgment/rule enforcement
- Call accuracy/game management
- Overall confidence


- 97% of all conferences participated
- 138 school representatives evaluated

- 77% of participants were coaches

Results
51% of participating NCAA coaches were satisfied with the officiating observed during the 2008-2009 basketball season.

Coaches indicated officials' overall observed performance was satisfactory to excellent.

Coaches' 3 main concerns centered on:
- Officiating inconsistency
- Ineffective communication
- Graying of the officiating pool
