A quantitative study was conducted to examine the relationship between proactive coping and a referee's ability to remain poised under
pressure. The proactive coping skills of Division I women's basketball referees were measured with a self-reported survey using an
established Proactive Coping Subscale (PCS). Statistical analysis compared referees self-reported results with direct observation
ratings from independent observers and head coaches of the participating teams. While the PCS scores suggest the referees tend to
cope well, the poise under pressure ratings by observers and coaches were mixed. The results of the study revealed the self-reported
evaluations by the referees on the PCS scores did not align with the evaluations by the independent observers. For more information,
